يعد الدلفين من الحيوانات الثدية المائية,ويعد الدلفين على قرابة من خنازير البحر والحيتان.
تتعدد انواع الدلافين ويعتقد ان هناك حوالي 40 نوعا منها وتقسم الى 17 جنسا معروفا.
يتراوح طولها وحجمها بين 1.2 متر وحوالي 40 كغ كدلفين ماوي - الى 9.5 متر و 10 أطنان كالاوركا .
يعيش الدلفين في جميع البحار على الكرة الارضية ويفضل البحار الاقل عمقا ويبقى قريبا من الارصفة القارية.
ويتغذى الدلفين بشكل عام على الاسماك والحبارات.
وتمتلك جميع انواع الدلافين فتحات على الراس تمكنها من تنفس الهواء خارج المياه.
وتتميز الدلافين بالذكاء و بالانتقال للوقت الحاضر ادمغة الدلافين المعاصرة كبيرة جداً، حتى أن حاصل كتلة دماغها مقارنة بمتوسط حجم أجسامها يأتي بالمرتبة الثانية بعد البشر.
